Conversations with myself – #6 Society

“In a society that tries to standardize thinking, individuality is not highly prized.” – Alex Grey

So, we have the media telling us what to think, what to eat, what to wear and basically who to be.

You already had media as a topic!

I know, but I need to set a good example fo start this new topic with.

Okay, go on.

Over the last few years, the amount of sources telling us who to be has become overwhelming.
But that isn’t even the worst thing.
The worst thing, is that we even buy it, we go with it.
Because we’re afraid that, once we dare to think otherwise, we’re being left out.
As if we need everyone else’s approval to go by the things we believe.

But we both know that isn’t true.
Since you’re as unique as it gets!

Hold your tongue!
I know I’m not a prime example, but at least I don’t go with everything the media throws at me!
I’m just sharing my opinion here.

Sorry, go on.

The fact that everyone has another idea behind what is normal and what not.
That is what takes us down.
Whenever we feel comfortable with what we do, it only takes that many time, before someone else talks us down on what is normal.
Yet they never dare to ask for your idea behind what is normal and what not.
Because they are afraid that it’s not in the same range as they are thinking.
And it’s due to that little thing, that it’s so hard to function in society in the way we would love to.

And here you are, talking to yourself.
Would you say that is normal?

For me it is.
But I won’t do it at the office or any other public place, for the same reason as said above.

Which is why you’re not a great example.

Indeed…
But on the other hand, I don’t mind about anything else I do.
It’s not normal to walk around the office without shoes.
Yet there I go, not caring about what others think.
For many, it’s not normal to act the way we do at home or around friends.
Which is why everyone has a second persona.
A second someone to be when the moment asks for it.
Even without them knowing.

How can you be someone else without knowing?

Well… Not without knowing.
But changing to the second persona happens even if we don’t want to.
It’s your mind’s way of warning you.
Just to be sure that you’re at your best wherever you are.

Which is good when you are at school, work or any other important location/event.

Indeed.
But the extra pressure comes to those who are aware of their change.
To those who do not feel comfortable in their normal character, and feel forced to be someone else for most of the time.

So, what would you say to those?

Don’t worry!
You don’t have to force yourself!
Be who you want to be and accept that not everyone will like you for that.
Which is good, because you can do without those who do not accept your true self!

Sounds good to me.
So… When will you start following your own advice?

Depends… When will you stop stalking me?
